How to Maintain a Garden Fountain

If you're new to garden fountains, have just purchased one, or are considering purchasing one, then you may like to know, what's the upkeep like? You may be worried that keeping a fountain will be too much work. The truth is, it is not much work at all! If you keep in mind these few tips, you will have a clean, beautiful fountain to enjoy for years to come.

The first thing you must consider is the location of your wall fountain. Remember that falling leaves and debris can get into your fountain and clog the pump, so try to locate it in a place out of the way of falling leaves. This means that under a tree is not the best place for your fountain. If you are set on having it under a tree, you can still do so; it will just require a bit more work. Every few days you will need to remove the leaves from the water. If the pump clogs up, use a toothbrush or washcloth to clean the outside, and then open it up and clean the inside in the same way.

Get a bottle of water treatment to prevent algae from growing. If you already have algae, a few drops per gallon from a bottle of this should get rid of it; you need not completely change the water. Follow the directions on the back of the bottle carefully. The bottle should last you a long time, so it will not be an expensive or frequent investment.

You will need to add water to your desktop fountain periodically to ensure that the water level stays above the pump. If the water level gets too low, the pump may burn out, and you'll have to replace it. Be especially wary on hot summer days to take good care of your fountain.

If you have hard water, it may deposit white minerals on the fountain. This is preventable by using distilled water. If your fountain is too large or you cannot use distilled water, try buying a special formula designed to prevent hard water.

Follow the instructions that come with your fountain carefully. If you keep these few tips in mind, maintaining your fountain should be hardly any work at all. Just care for it periodically as you might a houseplant.

Enjoy the beauty that your water fountain provides. Take pride in caring for it. Your fountain is designed to bring beauty and calm to your garden. With a bit of care, it will do just that.
