How to Build a Small Water Garden

The allure of water gardens has lasted for centuries. Imagine flowers, birds, the sound of rushing water drowning out background noises, beautiful stones - all this can be yours in a small water garden complemented by a lovely fountain.

Building a water garden needn't be hard and doesn't have to take long at all. You can start with a simple pool of water and pump, or buy a lovely fountain to accent your garden. When you order a fountain, it comes complete. It is easy to set up and will be ready to run in no time. The wall fountain you choose can be as large or small as you like, as long as space permits it.

If you want aquatic plants in your garden, choose a fountain with a pool, or set it inside a shallow pool of water. Contact a local aquarium or pond center, which are great sources for obtaining water plants.

Next add things that will give your water garden a personal touch. These can include stones large and small that you purchase or find in the woods, along a river, or at the beach. Potted flowers make for beautiful viewing. Wind chimes can add to the beauty and pleasant noise of trickling water. Wood features - perhaps a bench - are also great options. You may wish to add hand-made stepping stones, or ones purchased from a garden supplier. Your creativity is the limit when it comes to your water garden!

The placement of your water fountain should render it the focal point if you wish for the garden to be primarily a water garden. Place your fountain in the center or in the back center of the garden for easy viewing. Build around it. If you start with a fountain and then add things around it, you will create a balanced, harmonious look. Experiment until your garden feels just right.

Finally, sit back and relax. Admire your work. The garden may help you concentrate on things like work, drawing, reading, and writing. Your garden should be a haven and a refuge, a place where you feel good. Your garden can also be a work in progress, one you can continuously update and improve upon. When you find something you'd like to add - perhaps a small statue or a new flower - go ahead. The more thought you put into it, the more your small water garden will truly be yours.
